City of Tulsa, Tulsa Metro Chamber and Tulsa County announce downtown development effort

City, Chamber and County officials today detailed how a consultant group will work to implement the downtown master plan approved by the Tulsa Metropolitan Area Planning Commission and the Downtown Coordinating Council and adopted in 2010 by the Tulsa City Council.

The consulting firm, Mary Means & Associates, will identify and prioritize opportunities for growth and development in downtown Tulsa through broad stakeholder engagement. The group will build upon recent momentum created by effective partnership and successful downtown development efforts. The consultants will reaffirm or identify new catalytic projects through stakeholder interviews, build consensus among stakeholders and recommend the most effective partnerships best suited to Tulsa, which will be tasked with overseeing strategy implementation.

With more than $430 million in recently completed, current and planned private investment downtown, Tulsa region leaders are excited to build upon the impressive progress in the city’s core.

“As the Tulsa region continues to establish itself as a national leader in many respects, the downtown area will play a vital role in that effort,” Tulsa Mayor Dewey F. Bartlett, Jr., said. “I am thrilled by the progress we’ve seen in downtown, and I know that there are many more opportunities to enhance the area even further.”

Tulsa Metro Chamber President and CEO Mike Neal said downtown Tulsa is an important part of broader regional economic development efforts throughout northeast Oklahoma.

“Downtown’s continued growth and success is integral to the Chamber’s mission of regional economic development, and the growing momentum in Tulsa’s urban core benefits all of northeastern Oklahoma,” Neal said.

Tulsa County Commissioner Karen Keith stated: “Many residents from throughout Tulsa County work and play in downtown Tulsa, and revitalization in the city’s urban core will yield positive results not only for Tulsa but also for the greater Tulsa County area and beyond.”
