Tulsa Sports Commission secures 2014 NCAA Division I women’s golf championships finals

The NCAA announced today that Tulsa will host the 2014 Division I Golf Championships Finals to be held May 20 through 23, 2014. The Tulsa Sports Commission’s bid for the event beat out 25 other host bid packages to secure the prestigious event that will be held at the Tulsa Country Club.

“This event will bring great exposure to the Tulsa region,” Ray Hoyt, senior vice president of VisitTulsa and the Tulsa Sports Commission said. “NCAA events have a level of prestige that can be appreciated across all audiences. It’s a great honor that we were chosen to host the women’s golf finals and we’re excited to continue the successful partnership with the NCAA organization.”

The University of Tulsa will act as local NCAA host school, and assisted the Tulsa Sports Commission on the bid package. TU and the Tulsa Sports Commission also hosted the NCAA Division I basketball championship second and third rounds at the BOK Center in 2010.

“We’re excited to join the Tulsa Sports Commission and Tulsa Country Club as hosts for the 2014 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship,” said Tulsa Director of Athletics Ross Parmley. “As Tulsans, we all know about the great golf courses in this community and now we have another opportunity to showcase one of those venues to the college golf world. Just like with hosting the NCAA Tennis Championships in 2004 and 2008, and the NCAA First & Second Rounds of Basketball in 2010, I have no doubt that the Tulsa community will once again step up as spectators and volunteers to support this national championship event.”

The Tulsa Country Club recently underwent renovations to the course and clubhouse last year, updating and modernizing Tulsa’s oldest golf course. Tulsa Country Club last hosted the women’s championships in 1999, when the Duke Blue Devils finished eight strokes ahead of Arizona Stat and Georgia to capture the team title.

“We are thrilled to host this championship event, particularly as it will be our first opportunity to showcase our new golf course,” said Jason Fiscus, general manager and chief operating officer of the Tulsa Country Club. “Tulsa Country Club last hosted the NCAA women’s championship in 1999, and the recent renovations to our course and clubhouse by Rees Jones will make for an even more fantastic experience for the players, coaches and spectators.”

The 2014 NCAA Golf Championship will be the 33rd NCAA Championship event for women’s golf.

“This is exciting to bring the biggest event in collegiate golf back to the city of Tulsa,” said Tulsa Women’s Golf Coach Randy Keck. “Tulsa is a great golf city. Over the years, I’ve had so many coaches talk about what a great tournament it was back in 1999. The Tulsa Country Club, with the renovation, is a great place to serve as the host site. We’re looking forward to an outstanding event.”

The Tulsa Sports Commission is part of VisitTulsa, the Tulsa Metro Chamber’s convention and visitors program, and exists to create and attract sporting events to the Tulsa region, creating a positive economic impact and enhancing the quality of life.
