TulsaBizPac now accepting contributions

Approximately six months ago, Tulsa Metro Chamber leadership formed a local Political Action Committee called TulsaBizPac. The bi-partisan leadership of TulsaBizPac intends to identify and support candidates with a proven track record of diplomacy and leadership on reforming issues which impact the city of Tulsa and consequently the entire metro region.

With your support and investment, TulsaBizPac will play an active role at the ballot box by backing candidates who back progress; candidates who not only say they want to move the city of Tulsa forward, but actually act to make it happen.

“Chamber and community leaders are taking a proactive approach to political involvement and leadership,” said Mike Neal, president and CEO, Tulsa Metro Chamber. “It is urgent we begin making a difference this election year.”

For more information or to contribute to the PACs, please contact Tulsa Metro Chamber Vice President of Government Affairs Gwendolyn Caldwell at (918) 560-0211 or email gwendolyncaldwell@tulsachamber.com.

One Place Tower breaks ground

Downtown Tulsa’s skyline is set to have a new addition. Developers broke ground last Friday on the 18-story One Place Tower. The tower is situated in a prominent location directly in front of the iconic BOK Center. The nearly one-third million square feet of office space is 100 percent leased with additional retail and restaurants space located on the ground floor.

The anchor tenant is Cimarex Energy, a Denver-based oil and gas exploration company. According to the Tulsa Metro Chamber’s economist Bob Ball, Cimarex’s economic impact on downtown Tulsa is $1.8 million after three years.

“This project truly represents a significant return on the public’s investment in downtown Tulsa – through Vision 2025 – and proves our region’s dream for downtown is being realized,” said Delise Tomlinson, executive director of downtown development for the Tulsa Metro Chamber. “OnePlace will add life and vitality to the downtown experience and serves as a catalyst for further downtown development.”

One Place Tower is the first phase in the overall development of One Place. This mixed-use development will feature residential units, a hotel, public and more retail and restaurants. Northwestern Mutual Financial Network has already announced plans to build its Oklahoma flagship office in the development. Commencement on the next phase is expected in the third quarter of 2011.

One Place was designed by Miles Associates and construction will be completed by Flintco Companies.

Pro Tempore Brian Bingman approves interim studies

Senate President Pro Tempore Brian Bingman announced committee assignments and approval of 29 interim studies that will include issues that were promised by the Senate before session adjourned and others that are new requests. Among these is the review of multiple bond requests made toward the end of the session, including the $40 million bond supporting the establishment of the Oklahoma Museum of Music and Popular Culture.

“Senate members have requested studies into some of Oklahoma’s most critical issues,” said Bingman. “I appreciate their focus and willingness to tackle such big issues in preparation for another great session in 2012.”

All study requests were granted and one study regarding water issues will be consolidated into a joint effort between the Senate and House. Committee meetings will begin this summer and conclude before the session starts in February 2012.

“We look forward to learning more about the specific challenges and opportunities each of these issues bring,” concluded Bingman.

World League Volleyball receives warm welcome to Tulsa
Local economy enjoys boost from out-of-town visitors, team

Approximately 6,000 tickets were sold to the World League Volleyball matches hosted at The University of Tulsa Reynolds Center last Friday and Saturday night where the community was introduced to the world’s best in volleyball play.

The U.S. Men’s National Team fell to Brazil 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19, Friday evening, but upset top-ranked Brazil, 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23, on Saturday evening during the FIVB World League matches.

The U.S. Men, ranked fifth in the world by the FIVB, improve to 6-4 with 18 points in the World League Pool A of the Intercontinental Round. The U.S., tied for second with Poland in Pool A, closes out pool play on July 1-2 against Puerto Rico (0-10) at the Walter Pyramid on the Long Beach State University campus in Long Beach, Calif. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. PT.

Brazil, which sits atop Pool A with two matches remaining in Poland (6-4) next week, falls to 8-2 during World League action. Both of Brazil's losses are to the United States as the Americans also defeated it 3-1 on June 12 at Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

U.S. Head Coach Alan Knipe complimented his team in posting another second-night upset of Brazil.

“We don’t want to continue to be a second-night team,” he said. “Although I think it takes considerable character to be able to do it.”

The Tulsa Sports Commission worked with USA Volleyball to attract the Olympic athletes to Tulsa helping expose Tulsa to an international audience with the matches being broadcast live internationally by Versus. In addition to an estimated $400,000 economic impact resulting from out-of-town guests visiting from more than 21 states including New York, the Brazil team was also seen supporting the economy while taking a break from practice to visit Woodland Hills Mall, Best Buy and other local retailers.

Date set for Gov. Mary Fallin’s State of the State address

The Tulsa Metro Chamber announced last week it will host Gov. Mary Fallin for a State of the State address to the Tulsa business community.

Fallin will provide an update on Oklahoma's state of affairs after a rather successful 2011 legislative session, and brief regional partners, business leaders and Chamber staff on the upcoming year’s top priorities and issues.

The address is scheduled for noon on Monday, July 18 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 100 E. Second St. For more information or to attend, visit www.tulsachamber.com or email events@tulsachamber.com.

Sen. Coburn schedules town hall meeting in Tulsa

U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, M.D., recently announced he will hold a town hall meeting in Tulsa next month to take questions and address important issues for Oklahoma and the nation.

“I encourage everyone to attend and participate in these town halls,” said Coburn. “These settings give me an important opportunity to hear directly from the Oklahomans I am representing, and they provide a chance for Oklahomans to hear my views on current legislation in Congress.”

Coburn is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and the Committee on Finance. Coburn represents traditional, Oklahoma values and lists his top priorities as reducing wasteful spending, protecting his constituents’ liberties, balancing the budget, protecting the sanctity of human life, and improving health care access and affordability.

The town hall meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 6 at the Union High School Performing Arts Center, 6636 S. Mingo Rd.

Port of Catoosa turns 40

The nation’s most inland water port, the Tulsa Port of Catoosa, celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and its impact on the region is more than apparent.

According to the Tulsa World, the port was the culmination of a decade of studies, a massive federal building project and $21.1 million in general obligation bonds from taxpayers in Tulsa and Rogers counties.

Today, the Tulas Port of Catoosa is a 2,000-acre industrial park and multi-modal shipping complex, and the site of 63 industrial facilities that employ almost 3,000 people.

The port is a vital asset for business recruitment in the Tulsa region.

“The industrial area around the port is probably one of the more popular sites that companies and consultants look at when they come to Tulsa,” Tulsa Metro Chamber Senior Vice President Jim Fram told the Tulsa World. “It plays a tremendous role when we are talking to other companies, especially when we are pitching to companies that are close to the East or West Coast or the Gulf (of Mexico).”

Communications team wins industry awards

The Tulsa Metro Chamber communications team was recognized last week at a banquet hosted by the Public Relations Society of America Tulsa Chapter for excellence in their field.

The annual SilverLink Awards are presented each year to professionals executing campaigns and tactics that exhibit the highest standards in achieving set goals and objectives in the areas of marketing, communications and public relations.

The team received a SilverLink for a direct mail piece, a collaboration with Littlefield brand development firm, used by the economic development team to highlight Tulsa’s four modes of transportation via a creative graphic video. A second SilverLink was awarded for the media relations tactic used to manage media queries and requests and generate positive press for the hosting of the 2011 NCAA Men’s 2nd and 3rd Rounds Basketball Championships.

The eight-member team supports 18 programs, 12 websites, 11 e-newsletters, 22 print publications, 120 annual events and five social media identities.
